Abdominal obesity is an important metabolic condition associated with the acceleration and severity of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic viral hepatitis C (CHC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical, laboratory and morphological features of the course of liver fibrosis in patients with abdominal obesity and CHC. The study included 126 patients with CHC (56% men, 44% women, mean age 47.3±5.2 years). Patients were divided into 2 groups depending on the presence of abdominal obesity (waist circumference ≥94 cm in men, ≥80 cm in women). The degree of liver fibrosis was assessed based on the results of elastography (FibroScan), laboratory tests (ALT, AST, glucose, lipid spectrum) and liver biopsy. Conclusion: Abdominal obesity is an important factor in accelerating the development and severity of liver fibrosis in patients with CHC. In the diagnosis and treatment of such patients, it is advisable to focus on metabolic disorders and implement appropriate therapeutic strategies.
